Haglund’s Bump (Haglund’s Deformity)

What Is Haglund’s Bump?
Haglund’s Bump is a bony enlargement on the back of the heel. When footwear rubs against this area, it can cause irritation, swelling and pain.
Common Symptoms
A noticeable bump at the back of the heel
Pain where the Achilles tendon attaches
Redness or swelling from shoe friction
Discomfort in rigid shoes
Sometimes associated with bursitis
Typical Causes
Genetic foot shape (high arches often contribute)
Tight or stiff heel counters in shoes
Walking on the outside of the heel
Repetitive rubbing from footwear
Treatment Options
Footwear modification (softer heel counters)
Orthotic support
Calf stretching
Icing to reduce inflammation
Heel lifts
Protective padding
In persistent cases, surgical opinion may be considered
When to Seek Help
If the bump becomes painful, inflamed or affects daily footwear choices, podiatric assessment can help relieve symptoms.
